Review! Things in the Mirror by DJ Shaw

From the time Rissa was six or seven years old, she knew that there were things trying to gain access into our world. She wasn’t old enough, at that age, to grasp the concept of what these things were or what the difference between their world and ours truly was. She grew up with this knowledge and no one to share it with. Until she got married and she shared her deepest, darkest secret with the love of her life. Tired of being teased over her childhood fear, she decides to confront it head on and that is when things get really interesting.

Did your friends ever convince you to light some candles and stand in front of a bathroom mirror and chant Bloody Mary's name? That seems to be what triggered DJ Shaw's short story.

Although I like the concept, I think this story would have been better suited as a novella. I understand the need to tell the story - and back story - quickly, but I felt rushed. I wish the author would have lingered on the childhood events that lead up to the present. I think that would have added to the suspense.

While I predicted a slightly different ending, I was not disappointed. This isn't a fairy tale, and not all tales should have a happy ending.

I'm looking forward to reading more from DJ Shaw.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

DJ Shaw belongs to the part of the Unseelie Sidhe that lives in Albuquerque, NM with her husband, The Vengeance Demon, Terminal, the beast who stole her heart, and together they have spawned five children. They also own an Ocelot and four Hell Hounds. She loves to write about the experiences of her Dark Brethren, and some of her own.
